A Wedding Weekend

June 22-24
Napa (Yountville), CA

This weekend Mom, Dad and I attended the lovely nuptials of Katie and Dirk in Yountville, CA. I had never spent any time in California’s wine country. It was very pretty but I’m not 100% convinced that it was 10 times prettier than King Estates winery in Eugene or even Katie’s parent’s backyard. I am certain, however, that it cost 10 times the money.

Our trip down to SFO was super delayed, which regular blog readers or travelers know is NOT surprising. Our 12PM flight didn’t leave until 3:30PM. We were hoping to make it to Napa in time for dinner but after landing, waiting AN HOUR for our bags and getting our rental car, we decided to stop and eat in downtown San Francisco. We went to the Cheesecake Factory atop the Macy’s on Union Square and had a nice meal. After a stop at Wal-Mart for some groceries, we finally made it to our hotel, The Villagio Inn and Spa, at 11PM.

I was exhausted Saturday morning, so while Mom and Dad went out to explore the little town, I continued sleeping. In the later afternoon I ventured out to see what I could find. Yountville is a super cute town, that’s obviously VERY wine-centric. Not being a big drinker, it’s a place I’m happy to have experienced but I’m not burning to go back.

The wedding was slated to start at 6PM. Also slated to start around 6PM was the 1500M in the Decathlon at the Olympic Trials at Hayward Field. I was super bummed when I saw the date Katie and Dirk had chosen for their wedding because I knew it conflicted with the first few days of the Olympic Trials. While waiting for the bride to walk down the aisle I was anxiously refreshing my phone, looking for the results page to update. Two minutes before the commencement of the wedding the results were in. Ashton Eaton had broken the World Record in the Decathlon, an amazing accomplishment for by all accounts an amazing young man.

The wedding ceremony was short and sweet. After a hors d’oeuvres hour, we moved to an adjacent courtyard for dinner. The food, service, and company were all top notch. The best man’s speech was hilarious. Around 9PM we moved to a “barrel room” for cake and dancing. We partied the night away with neighbors and friends, new and old, until nearly 1AM.

Needless to say, we didn’t get up early Sunday morning. We made it out the door in time for our late check out at 1PM. We grabbed a brunchish meal at IHOP on our drive back to SFO. By 9PM we were back to the house.

All in, it was a short and sweet wedding weekend. I’m still a little bummed that I missed the first three days of track but I’m glad I had the opportunity to celebrate with friends. Congrats again to Katie and Dirk!

Until the Shore in three weeks,
Katy
