Almost there...

December 4-5, 2012
Eugene, San Francisco, Tokyo, Singapore & Kuala Lumpur

I was up early this morning to embark on my second international adventure with Scott of 2012. Today I am on my way to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It will take me roughly 28 hours to get from my house to my hotel at the Singapore airport where I’ll sleep for 8 hours before continuing on to KL in the morning.

The flight out of Eugene included a fun twist of boarding the wrong plane. The agent loaded the first batch of passengers onto the CJ700, not the CJ200, which was headed to Denver, not San Francisco. Once the error was figured out everyone was loaded onto the correct plane and we made our way to SFO. Shockingly I didn’t sleep on that flight even though I was running on only 2 hours of sleep. I had a chatty seat mate and I was worried about my poor little Chippy who was scheduled for surgery this AM. His affinity for eating things like shoe laces and hair ties finally caught up to him.

On my flight from SFO to Tokyo I crashed hard. I slept the first six hours after takeoff. I then ate and watched two movies, The Campaign and People Like Us. The 11 hour flight flew bye. I could have taken a few more hours to take another nap. In Tokyo my first order of business was finding an internet connection to get word on my little guy. The United Club signal took forever to work but I was eventually relieved to find in my email that Chipster made it through surgery well, even though he had A TON of stuff in his stomach. Hopefully his evening goes well and he’ll be able to come home tomorrow night.

My flight from Tokyo to Singapore was another eight hours. I actually talked to my seat mate this time. He was an interesting guy from Calgary. He’s a lawyer in the oil and gas industry who travels ALL the time. He’s been to 96 countries. He is a fan of Canada’s medical system, although he did admit some of his good experiences with it (he broke his arm while climbing the Eiger in Switzerland and didn’t get treatment until he went home) were a result of his connections. He believes the gas pipeline will be built eventually. When I pressed him on whether or not it would happen in the next four years, he said he believes it will be started but not completed by the time Obama leaves office. I eventually watched a couple more movies, Sparkle and Celeste and Jesse Forever, ate another meal, took another nap and wrote this here blog. I also spent some time reviewing the media offerings. Does anyone consider “Dude, Where’s My Car?” a classic? Evidently United Airlines does.

Upon landing in Singapore it was smooth sailing, minus the whole leaving my passport envelope in a restroom on the wrong side of a secure area. I made it through customs quickly, went to the bathroom (where I mistakenly left my passport while taking the picture below), picked up my bags and walked about 200M to my hotel at the Changi airport. It only took all of five minutes in Singapore to be reminded of how much I love the cleanliness and honesty of the place. Even in the hot humid air that hit two seconds after walking into the jetway, no one smelled. I also love how a person can leave her passport in a bathroom and have it found and returned to an information counter in the time it takes her to realize it was missing.

It’s now 2AM and I’m TIRED. I must sleep before waking at 9AM tomorrow to catch my flight to meet Scott in Kuala Lumpur.

Until tomorrow,
Katy
