Yummy Love

January 27, 2013
Hong Kong

We were to breakfast this morning by 9:30AM. The buffet at the hotel wasn’t as good as the one in the Maldives but it was still pretty good. We met Mom and Dad in the lobby around 10:30AM to go shopping. I even had time to sneak in a quick workout while brushing my teeth thanks to this stair stepper in the bathroom.

Mom was on the hunt for tableware. Dad got a list of recommended shopping spots from the concierge and we set out on our way. Our first stop was a large department store called SOGO. We had fun going from floor to floor looking at all kinds of random items. We had particular fun in the toy, china wear and luggage section. Ben discovered Zero Halliburton luggage and the fact that it was used on the moon. He now has plans to buy a piece as soon as one of his three conditions are met. If you see him abusing his current suitcase, it’s because he wants to break it so he has an excuse to buy a new one.

Our next stop was a mall across the street. We went to the food court for lunch where I had a pretty darn good pad thai for $7. We then strolled by a few stores before spending a little time in the Apple store. The size of the store was insane as was the number of “personal trainers.”

Hong Kong's version of Times Square.

I've never seen so many red shirted Apple "personal trainers".

Grab machines are popular in Asia. Even in makeup departments.

You can write your own caption for this one.

After shopping we made our way back to the Grand Hyatt to meet Yi-Chen for dinner. Mom and Dad wanted to run up to their room for a few, so Ben, Yi-Chen and I waited in the lobby. Yi-Chen and I had fun watching wedding guests arrive while Ben rested in a chair. The flower entry into the wedding was insane. I can’t imagine what it would have cost to produce it in the states.

Yi-Chen made dinner arrangements for us at a place within walking distance called Fu Sing Shark Fin. I was a little nervous about the meal as I was thinking we were in for some seriously fishy grossness but Yi-Chen actually ordered quite well. We had very good beef, pork, veggies and soup (which was NOT shark fin). The two desserts weren’t great but all in the meal was very nice.

Post dinner we made our way to the Night Market. It was smaller than I remembered, with less interesting merchandise, yet I still had fun. The highlight was probably when Ben got accosted by three young Hong Kong guys that really wanted to take their picture with him. The one kid, who was actually 6’ 1”, a giant for Hong Kong, said, “How did you get so tall? How do you do it?!?” Like he, himself, longed to be taller. They also wanted to know, like many others in Hong Kong, if Ben played basketball. He told them no but that he fenced. They were like, “uhhh, okay.” Ben was nice to them and smiled for their photo.

Our last stop before heading back to the hotels was McD’s for an ice cream cone. This was our first McDonald’s stop this Asian adventure. We were greeted by this sign and offering (second picture below). It provided literally 10 minutes of solid ab workout laughter.

Soft Hard, Yummy Love any one?

Another fun day in HK is now in the books. We are getting up early to go and see Victoria Peak tomorrow, so it’s time for bed!

Until tomorrow,
Katy

Metro Ad of the Day:

Is the goal here really to ride a horse? Regardless he looks pleased.
